For a book that keeps getting compared to Hunger Games in amount of quality they are so wrong. Truly no matter how good this book is, it’s two dimensional, and there is no depth to the plot. Stereotype after stereotype and not a difference to read. This is one of those books I feel were just written to sell, make money, and not for the joy of writing and sharing a story. But to understand any of what I’m saying let me tell you a little bit about the book:
In Arras, a frozen time bubble of Earth, girls have the ability to ‘spin’ the world around them. One such girl is our main character Adelice Lewys, a 16 year old with the most powerful spinning there is; she is worthy enough to be a Crewel. The word Crewel is homophone of the word cruel, and boy do they share similarities. Being a Crewel (basically in charge) has lead many previous Crewels to become cruel, oh, the irony. Big surprise here when I say Adelice doesn’t want to be the most powerful woman in all of Arras she just wants love.
Really?! How many books are going to play that card? Here they sell it as a dystopian novel when it truly is just a romance set in a dystopian future. Our heroine, Adelice, is basically useless the entire book. She goes around waiting for everyone else around her to decide her future while she makes no attempt to secure before it’s slipped between her fingers. Sometimes she does the most annoying thing by acting like the typical stereotypical teen who shows no respect, and other times she is the most naive, ignorant girl there is.
Rating: 3 out of 5. There was no depth to the book and it had infuriating stereotypes that no young adult author should have.
